Does Skating Help?

Cross- over sports, like languages, can be problematic- anyone who has tried the European road trip to the Algarve will testify to the brain-addle that comes with switching from Spanish to Portuguese for instance. The similarities get you some of the way there, but the subtle differences can bugger you right up when it comes to the crunch.

Skating through the flat days has it’s advantages- stops you getting too bored, keeps the fitness up, helps maintain the adrenaline levels- but does it really help with your surfing technique?

Many of the key elements are common to both sports of course: balance, timing, body rotation, focus on the next move rather than the last one. And innovations in truck & deck design have lent elements to street skating which closely resemble the feel of pumping & carving down the line on a surfboard.

But the injuries can mess you right up- wrist, collarbone, knee, ankle. Everything aches after a session on the ramp. Maybe when you’re young, have a lifetime ahead of you and are made of rubber… but when you treasure every moment you can get in the water… I’m just not sure if it’s worth it.

Matt the Farmer,
the farm can wait XXXXXXXXXX

hello, i am matt the farmers daughter, and FYI Tony, the skate ramp was in seriouse need of a feminine touch. so there.
LOL ! Go Hattie ! I stand corrected, so which bit did you do then ? it looks like it needs a bit more work on it mate, get busy H
I wouldn’t say cross over sports help with techniques, but as mentioned it definitely helps overcome boredom and keep the fitness levels up. I remember trying to surf when I started snowboarding and was constantly eating snow
