Oli cover shot
Digital photography, you just have to love it.
12 days ago, on the eve of 28th January 2009, the swell charts for Porthleven were cooking and although it actually finished up smaller than hoped for, it’s still Porthleven, so, anythings possible. Oli Adams pulled into a squeaker and made it out, the light was ridiculous and there was seaweed on the reef.
6 days later, I’m stood in the rain on the rocks at little Fistral when the moby rings, quickly drive home, e mail a shot through to Steve England, drive back to Fistral and keep shooting.
7 days later the post man delivers through our front door, the 104th issue of Carve Magazine with a techno cover shot, stoked….

great shot
congrats
wheres that shot then, not uk
Glad you’re stoked…so’r we…general first reaction is ‘wow’!
Great shot Tony.
great shot - the blue writing is lovely, really goes with the colour of his eyes.
Sweeeeeeeeeeeeet shot T! I’ll be reading my copy on the beach in Thailand!
Its amazin what you can do in photoshop when you blitz the saturation…
Care to post a jpeg of the original raw pic for comparison?
LOL, with it being so strongly back lit, all they did was burn the face in, sorted, besides, photoshop is an art form in itself hit this for a master class
if thats all they did can we see the original? cos i’m hearing ugly rumors that the covers half photoshop…
LOL Dingo, step out of the shadows mate, we hiding nothing here, what do you want to say ?
i just want to see a full frame jpeg of the unprocessed raw. Just to contrast and compare and see what magic them mag people have done to it. Cos it dont look real. Tracks photoshoped a cover once and it blew up in their faces…
tracks photoshopped a guy into a 30 foot bomb. totally different. the use of colour to provoke emotional response in human beings has always been the centre of good art, baby.
“The aim of art is not to represent the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance”
[...] commitment to photography from the water paid off. Take a look at the surftwisted web site for more surf photography from around the cornish [...]
So thats a NO to showing the original? If its only been colour boosted whats the issue with sharing?
Tracks didnt photoshop a guy in- they added an extra couple of foot to the wave in the clumsiest way possible. Adding stuff thats not there to a photo is fakery of the highest order.
I would have to agree with blah about inward significance. I think all publishers like to play a little with the pictures they print. Although it would be interesting to look at the news stands if tinkering were banned for one whole month. Even better, make all photographers go back to using the same couple of brands of stock film too. perhaps the same thing for TV and films and music, ban all digital tampering, all this sensory stimulation is just too much.
Well, film was cheating too, velvia slide film had hyper real colours- thats why all the surf guys loved it.
And please, forgive me for not getting art- whats the inward significance of a dropknee barrel shot?
Thats interesting, surf photographers loved the hyper real colours of velvia. So there is nothing new here. It seems to me there is a compulsion to make pictures “hyper real”, because the basic photograph never lives up to the moment. The photographer sees it in all its glory, hears it, smells it, gets the pics home and however good the shot might be, he/she is going to think something is missing. Velvia would of course have to be banned during the month long experiment.
you don’t know? it’s significance has made you feel strongly enough to post about it on here so it’s rocked your boat and made you think. thats art!
obviously in your case it has tugged on a few strings, mainly i would suggest of the ego, evoking a negative critical response. this isn’t wrong or bad, indeed far from it. it’s a very good thing it’s helped you feel the need to express yourself therefore strengthening the justification of the image. all great art and images evoke similar strength and diversity of feeling. your response has upped it from a great image to a great evocative image.
well done tony, the tate beckons!
My boat is not rocked. I only posted on here cos I heard a rumour the photo had been faked.
and the titanic didnt sink…
“RUMOUR, n. A favorite weapon of the assassins of character.”
make love not photoshop war
xx
No reflection on TP.
Of course this could all be settled by showing us the original pic… If its not been doctored then theres no reason to not post it.
From what I can see Tony posted a section of the original picture on 15th of FEb, pretty much the day you asked to see it. Check out the photoshop and Yves Klein post.
A section yes. Not the full frame. This is the issue… I want to see the whole thing.
i think you have issues. ha ha ha… everyone else seems to like it!
So your happy with being lied to? With magazines falsifying covers? Where does it end?
to be honest it just looks nice. maybe you could take it to congressional hearing? i dont think anyone else cares
i’ve heard the mags have started falsifying the actual waves , pumping tons of water into the faces,
there all evil
false waves , false surfboards , no one is actual real anyway if i cant see you you don;t exist
aparently also the color blue doestn’t really exist either it’s just made of yellow and green as it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
noo…blues a lie? i loved blue…do i have to watch yellow and green movies now? is red still there. like can i still watch redtube..or is that like yellow and green too? is yellow an green taking over the world..is obama really yellow and green..omg! does obama even exist? maybe he’s just like a surfer photoshopped into the whitehouse. where does it end dingo..where? where? for god sake man SAAAAVE USSSSssssssss…..ugh…
blahs dead…i think he was taken out by some obamas photoshop technical asset protection agency…PSTech
So you’re all quite happy for magazines to run fake covers?
Fine. As long as we’ve got that straight.
And you’re right, no one cares, not like people read the mags anyway.
Yes, fake mags are good Dingo. They is healthy, surfing is healthy, so all is well. I love it when things are resolved peacefully.
Although the comment regarding the colour blue is f****ing outrageous where do you get off luffers, there is nothing wrong with pumping tonnes of water into the right places if all the correct sponsored surfers are assembled for the money shot.
dongo
is a fake mag cover when you get a few pages in and theres an thicker page?
or is it one of those ones that comes of in your hand????? i hate those ones
ha ha ha dingo take a chill pill. you’re far too caught up in your own importance, demanding people to show you stuff, making accusations, being all negative. no wonder everyones taking the piss! just ring up the mag an ask them if you’re so worried instead of ranting on anonymously.
oh yeah, i’m dead arnt i..er..blah2 - photoshop regenerated!?
Importance? Negative? Since when has seeking the truth been negative. The free press not forcing lies down our throats is important. It’s obviously been faked otherwise the original would have been posted by now. Because it hasn’t there’s only one conclusion- it has been faked. And as if the mag are gonna say ‘ ooh yeah that cover shot didn’t quite fit as we liked so we doctored it so it would…’
You lot go back to your blind, smug little world, fine with me, I came to find some truth and got nothing but glibness. I’m off to do some being important now. Bye.
better make that two pills…
i bet he’s spotty and 12,
this dingo guy’s really got a bee in his/her bonnet. why dont you just put them out of their misery, and put the original up?
i just watched this. its got some fo tonys work in it..totally outrageous. i’m with dingo..
