Severn bore will rule 2009
2009 is looking very good for the beautifull people. Those socialites, trend setters and debs that go by the name of “bore riders” are very excited about 2009. 2009 tides look set to “ROCK THEIR WORLDS”, and if you had any sense at all, you too would clock in for a weekend of fun in the mud, its compulsive, you’re going to love it.
Riding the Severn bore is easy during the day, but, thankfully there are 2 tides a day, allowing the real dudes access to their jollys. Bridges, fridges, dead cows, gas bottles and trees glance off their shins, shoulders and teeth as they flash upstream through the moonlight, funky.
Surftwisted has its very own team, the hardcore surfers of love, hunkered down at strategic bends in the majestic old river, so if you get stuck, just ask them for assistance. Gliding up stream you will be cheered from the bridges and more than likely, decorated with rose petals, the locals, easily identifiable by their rhythmic clapping and pale blue surfboards, will point out sites of particular interest as you sweep through the countryside, its a gas.
top tips for riding the bore
1. go long
2. bring chocolate
3. avoid the bridges, they hurt

The bore rocks… Come on the mighty Glos!
It goes right past my Mums garden, I’ll get her to throw out some bacon sandwiches.
is this serious ? why would they clap ?
Alright?
I’m from Pembs, got a 9′6″ and I’m thinking of a bore mission in Feb. Don’t know much about it though and would like to find out the wheres and hows. Where should I go? Is it a one-chance wave or can I scuttle upstream for another crack if I miss the slot?
Can’t wait!
hey Shire-pig, you are gonna love the bore, Ive only surfed it at night and shot it during the day,so Im not much help, but there are people who know everything you need to know, check them at much more helpfull sites than this one my friend, a couple of links to start from might be

go long, pull your dog lead/leash up, for that over the shoulder look (wont snag) hide really crap cars along the route and wear boots, its messy, but the people are great, the waves a scream and you are gonna laugh and want to do it again, stay lucky, t
This is the url of the bore forum, where the regulars will be happy to advise on where, how to, current conditions and so on.

Shire-pig, just turn up at the car park at Newnham in plenty of time to get suited and booted, and to get into the river about 20 mins before the wave is due, because the times can vary with the prevailing conditions.
A little news for all of you:
The Severn Bore Inn is closing down at some point this month, which is a great pity, because the landlord is very much surfer-friendly.
However, the new landlord of the White Hart at Broadoak nr Newnham has contacted us and has asked that we let it be known that his overflow car park, right on the riverside, can be used for overnight parking by surfers. They sell breakfasts as well, and they have steps going down to the water.
It didn’t work all the way up this month, but produced some of the biggest sections I’ve seen on the river. Good faceplant at the end of this.

i love that wave
More news. Over bridge works will affect access to the final section for approx one year. Info here:

Please respect any restrictions. We can’t afford to get on the wrong side of the harbour trustees.

I wish they would make their minds up.
Over is now NOT going to be closed.
Thanks Chiefs. All set to go for next Friday. Getting up at 0300 for the early tide. Mission on!
hey Shire Pig, 80 words would do it matey, get a face at http://www.gravatar.com and start scribbling
80 words? eh?
Bloody excited now. Got a squad of three equipped with beast-boards, a vague idea of where to go (Newnham…then somewhere else) and a tide-table. We’re driving up tomorrow night, staying the night on a mates boat in Penarth Marina and dawning it to catch the morning tide.
Tidy!
be lucky, your whole trip has just been hijacked by surftwisted, you are now on an official surftwisted assignment, we need words, galantry, photos, video and heroism, now, get off yer fat arse and get out there ! t
Hmmmm. Not the best expedition for our bore-squad. In fact I may have developed a touch of paraskevidekatriaphobia:
Woke up on the boat at about five am in pitch darkness, bewildered from an odd pharaoh dream and with my sleeping bag somehow pinning my arms by my side, sat bolt upright and smashed my head into the low deckhead. Followed my navigationally-challenged mate (in turn guided by his cold-war satnav) who confusingly led us past the M48 turnoff and onto the bridge… Negotiating the roundabout to come back over to Wales a guy on a motorbike high-sided into the car, came off his bike and probably bust some ribs - we spent the next half hour looking after him ’til the ambulance got there. Super-sound fella and fellow surfer who I hope is ok and back riding bikes and boards asap.
Missed the Newnham ride although my friend Paul was there and said it was ‘wierd and small’. Got to the Severn Bore Inn in good time but my cold-war satnav mate - who had the boards - got unsurprisingly lost. No big deal though as the bore that came through was tiny and no-one got much of a ride out of it. Went up to the bridge outside Gloucester and decided to just enjoy the spectacle and again it was pretty tiny - more a surge that any kind of wave. It was cool to watch it though, it’s a strange thing. And the vibe on the banks was amazing with kids hooting and a general air of friendliness.
Next time…
Yeh, the river was too deep for the upper areas, but not quite enough water in it for the lower areas to work anything like as well as last month. I couldn’t get in this month anyway..knee ligaments crocked by a slap from the last set of tides.
Next big tides are in August, peaking on the weekend of 22nd, with some night tides hitting 10m/4*
mid to late August eh ? sounds like a plan
Yeah we clocked the August tides and have thought about a rematch. I imagine the crowds would be hardcore mind. The night option appeals but probably requires a bit of bore-knowledge?
Some people actually prefer the nights. There’s less “traffic” in the water to contend with, and apparently it’s quite a weird sensory experience…easy to lose your bearings though.
Personally I would liken it to driving the wrong way up the motorway at night with your lights off. I’ve surfed something like 30-40 tides, which I was once told is about the right number before doing a night. But some people do the nights on their first visit..whatever floats your…log!
August should have very low levels of freshwater, which means most of the lower section may well be rubbish, but from the Severn Bore Inn and beyond stands a chance of being on good form. Saveoursevern.org will be organising a festival on that weekend to showcase the natural environment of the river, the tides, and the people who work the river. It’s not essentially a surfing fest, and is a non-camping event, but we’re trying to get some of the people who have featured in the history of bore riding either on the Severn or elsewhere in the world to come. Great photo opportunity: We’re hoping to create an opportunity to film Stu Matthews, Steve King, PJ, Sergio Laus, Fabrice Colas and others all on the wave at the same time. No confirmed visits from those who would have to travel as yet, but several positive statements of intention. I’m sure there could be space in there for Duncan?
Came across this site, noted the comment… The
Severn Bore Pub is open again and it is still surfer friendly…and plenty of places to camp! 4 & 5* bores due in early March…see you there!
