Surfers ear. It grows back !
Well, I’m just back from a hearing test and a yak with the consultant. Good and bad news for me. Lets start with the good. My hearing is pretty good, so I’m stoked with that. Bad news is, my bad bad ear is 95% grown over, and my good bad ear, operated on by the same guy, Dr Flannagan, 6 years ago, is growing back at a rate.
Here you go.
See the right one, apparently that one was wide open after they drilled it out 6 years ago, it’s growing back already, and the left ear is 95% grown over. The circled areas show you the amount of visible ear drum.
So, today’s decision. I don’t want the operation again, and unless the rate of infections steps up dramatically, I will just stick with ear plugs. Micro chisel, for at least part of the eventual surgery will probably be an option, due to the fact that since the first operation I have had tinnitus.
So people, “plug em or they drill em” , unless you think it won’t happen to you……. yeah right

Been plggin’ them in for ages and since then i haven’t had a single ear infection (they occurred on a monthly basis before that). The growth is there but so is my hearing so no drillin’ for now. I just wished my tinitus stopped!

Bollocks ! thats not good, I dont wear plugs and now I wonder what my ears look like. What happens with the Chissel?
How’s this- my birds got surfers ear and she doesn’t even surf? Only in one ear… The Dr’s well confused cos she’s a teacher not an outdoor instructor or anything…
maybe her doctors got shite eyes ?
I stayed outta the water for years cause of surfers ear. Pro Plugs got me back in. Seriously, as vital as a wetsuit.

Tony,
I’ve surfed for 40 years and I had 95% closure in one ear. I went to the House Ear Institue in Los Angeles. There they do more than just drill to remove bony growth inclusions. They actually cut the ear back from the head, next they push the middle ear canal back to the eardrum.. Next they grind the bony growth back, well away from the middle ear canal, leaving plenty of space for the middle ear. Then they pull the middle ear canal back into place and rebuild it and attach it to the Outer ear and reattach it to the head.
My good friend Leigh S. had his ear drilled but afterwards still had no hearing improvement. On my advice he went to the House EarInstitue and they found that the bone had grown behind the ear drum into the inner ear. After a second opertion and a long recovery Leigh is finally able to hear well again.
Any activity that cause cold air to blow over the ear can cause Surfers ear. Chauffers and delivery persons often have problems in their left ears in America due to the fact that the driver’s left ear is exposed to cold wind while the window is open…I guess that would be the opposite for you in England, since you drive on the other side of the road from us.
So before you go get your ears drilled again, please go on line and check this out.
I hope it works out for you and your suffering is over soon.
Peace
